SRAM Red 10 speed derailleur with 11 speed shifters

As detailed in my other blog, to achieve the weight and budget of the lightweight aero bike build, some creative thinking must be employed.

One of this out of the box thinking is to use a SRAM Red 10 speed rear derailleur with SRAM Red 22 Shifters.

Well guess what, it works a treat, smooth shifting and all.

Eventually I did buy SRAM Red 22 rear derailleur, why? There is no reason other than obsession to have matching components. The price difference is huge while the weight & performance is virtually identical. Both were bought used. 

SRAM Red 10 speed, 146 gram at USD 42

SRAM Red 22, 143 gram at USD 148

So in conclusion, if you are on a budget go with the SRAM Red 10 speed for your 11 speed bike build. I wonder if it will work with 12 speed as well...might try in the near future.
